Sitemap are of two types. One is Html sitemap and another is Xml sitemap. Html sitemap is a hierarchical model of the pages of a Web site which helps the user to navigate easily. Xml sitemap on the other hand is also a hierarchical model of the pages used to tell search engines like Google about the content on your site. If you are using Wordpress publishing tool for your site then you can simply use some available plugins which can take care of both Html and Xml sitemap. Now a consensus has been achieved wherein most of the search engines accept Xml sitemap. You can submit your sitemap to Google via their webmaster tool.
You can create you sitemap manually but why do you need to when help is available. There may free online or downloadable tools to create your sitemap. You may use these Google approved third party sitemap creator tools for sites created on various platforms like php, cms, html/css etc
