Techcrunch published that social networking service Facebook has acquired the domain fb.com from The American Farm Bureau. I am sure Facebook has paid a huge sum to acquire that domain. FB in most likelihood the compressed name of Facebook and hence has a brand value. There is a buzz for quite sometime in the web world about Facebook coming with their own email service. This got more weight when Google blocked Facebook from accessing Gmail accounts to look for address book for sending invitations. This way Facebook makes it easier to increase the social network. So the blocking of Gmail address will hit it hard. So Facebook decided to hit back more out of compulsion to have its own email service. Facebook has an advantage as it already has 500 million plus users on board are likely candidate to use Facebook mail.

Many bloggers have named the upcoming Facebook mail rumored to be named as Titan project as Gmail killer. I do not think it will be a Gmail killer night it will be a serious threat to Gmail. Gmail today is probably the best web based free email service available. It is more secure and has host of features. When Gmail came it did not kill Yahoo, Hotmail or AOL. On the contrary I feel, Facebook mail will be a serious threat to Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL. As Yahoo is in complete disarray, if Yahoo mail losses the war, Yahoo will find it difficult to cope. I also heard that FB.com may used for internal usage of Facebook. In that case, employees of Facebook will have xyz@fb.com on the lines of yahoo internal address like xyz@yahoo-inc.com

The domain whois look shows that FB.com is owned by Facebook and the domain FB.com redirects to Facebook.com.  Looking forward to email service from Facebook as that will lead to better service and more consolidation among free email service provider.
