Filed under: Google, News — admin @ 11:46 am

google news archiveGoogle recently announced in their official blog that they are going to scan all old newspapers by partnering with the publishers and will convert them to e-papers in their original format. They will be accessible online and will be searchable at http://news.google.com/archivesearch.  Earlier, the only medium of information was newspapers before radio and television. So there are tons of info which are now out of our reach. Once these info are made accessible online, we can put our hands on valuable info and can check precisely what was the news on a particular day. Google, the master of online search has millions of webpages indexed in its servers and now with this they are going to index pages of history too. It is indeed a good initiative. Cuil, the New Search Engine on the Block

Filed under: Search Engine — admin @ 3:24 pm

Cuil, pronounced as “cool” is the new search engine to help you search the internet. The domination of Google in the Internet search is towering. The next best on the list is yahoo, but it is nowhere near Google in terms of market share. There are few others like Microsoft Live search, Ask etc. Cuil launched by few former Google employees intend to position it as an alternative to Google search engine. Amazingly, the very first day Cuil server crashed due to overwhelming response. There are many flaws starting from poor search results to under rated interface. Citicism has been piling by heaps and bounds. Though, Cuil had pointed only two major issues hindering the search engine as of now.

Cuil claims to have the largest index of websites with 120 billion pages - in the world. But it is no where near google. Cuil has to do a lot of catching. I know Cuil is new and a comparision with well Google may not be fair. However, market and business dynamics will not see what is fair, it will just see which is better. If Cuil can improve quickly, it will have a chance to stand or just fade away.

Read about Cuil company profile.

New Browser Chrome from Google

Filed under: Browser — admin @ 5:44 am

The browser market is pretty saturated where big boss Microsoft having the largest market share with its Internet Explorer. There is also Mozilla Firefox which is run by Mozilla foundation with active technical and financial support from Google. Google was actively promoting Firefox., so why Google needed to come with a new browser altogether? The answer lies in Google’s insecurity that Microsoft with the help of widely popular Internet Explorer may influence search in future. Google suspected that Microsoft may send searchers to its search engine “Live Search”.

Google has made Chrome public today with the Beta version and is available for free download on its website. This browser is an open source software and is available free of cost. Chrome claims to be very simple yet high security. Chrome has capitalized on open source software like Webkit, Mozilla firefox etc and some new technologies in an effort to give a next generation web browser. A comic book by Scott McCloud has been sent to bloggers and journalists explaining the features and motivation for using it.

The browser war will be hotting up with Microsoft releasing IE 8 beta 2, Mozila Firefox 3.0 and now Joined by Google Chrome beta. By the end of this year it should be clear if Chrome is Chromosome or just namesake! With Chrome Google may be looking to have a larger say which it did not had with the independent minded Mozilla corp. With chrome Google also intends to have better integration with its various tools like Analytics, Picassa etc. As of now Chrome is only available for Windows XP/Vista. It will launch for Mac OS and Linux soon. Read more about the features…….

Now the question is which browser will it hit the most? My understanding tell Mozilla Firefox will be the worst hit. As Firefox will now become almost a step child. I do not think IE will be hit very hard but it can have long term implications.

A first look at the Google Chrome browser.

Note: I will post more updates as I go through the browser more.
