Apple Announced Safari Browser 4 Public Beta

Filed under: Product Review — admin @ 5:37 am

Apple® today announced the public beta of Safari® 4, and claimed it to be the world’s fastest and most innovative web browser for Mac® and Windows PCs. The Nitro engine in Safari 4 runs JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3.* Innovative new features that make browsing more intuitive and enjoyable include Top Sites, for a stunning visual preview of frequently visited pages; Full History Search, to search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages; Cover Flow®, to easily flip through web history or bookmarks; and Tabs on Top, to make tabbed browsing easier and more intuitive. Apple created Safari to bring innovation, speed and open standards back into web browsers, and today it takes another big step forward, said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. Safari 4 is the fastest and most efficient browser for Mac and Windows, with great integration of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards that enables the next generation of interactive web applications.

Safari 4 is built on the world’s most advanced browser technologies including the new Nitro JavaScript engine that executes JavaScript up to 30 times faster than IE 7 and more than three times faster than Firefox 3. Safari quickly loads HTML web pages three times faster than IE 7 and almost three times faster than Firefox 3.

Apple is leading the industry in defining and implementing innovative web standards such as HTML 5 and CSS 3 for an entirely new class of web applications that feature rich media, graphics and fonts. Safari 4 includes HTML 5 support for offline technologies so web-based applications can store information locally without an Internet connection, and is the first browser to support advanced CSS Effects that enable highly polished web graphics using reflections, gradients and precision masks. Safari 4 is the first browser to pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 test, which examines how well a browser adheres to CSS, JavaScript, XML and SVG web standards that are specifically designed for dynamic web applications.

Safari for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPod® touch are all built on Apple’s WebKit, the world’s fastest and most advanced browser engine. Apple developed WebKit as an open source project to create the world’s best browser engine and to advance the adoption of modern web standards. Most recently, WebKit led the introduction of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards and is known for its fast, modern code-base. The industry’s newest browsers are based on WebKit including Google Chrome, the Google Android browser, the Nokia Series 60 browser and Palm webOS.

Innovative new features in Safari 4 include

• Top Sites, a display of frequently visited pages in a stunning wall of previews so users can jump to their favorite sites with a single click;
• Full History Search, where users search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages to easily return to sites they have seen before;
• Cover Flow, to make searching web history or bookmarks as fun and easy as paging through album art in iTunes®;
• Tabs on Top, for better tabbed browsing with easy drag-and-drop tab management tools and an intuitive button for opening new ones;
• Smart Address Field, that automatically completes web addresses by displaying an easy-to-read list of suggestions from Top Sites, bookmarks and browsing history;
• Smart Search Field, where users fine-tune searches with recommendations from Google Suggest or a list of recent searches;
• Full Page Zoom, for a closer look at any website without degrading the quality of the site’s layout and text;
• built-in web developer tools to debug, tweak and optimize a website for peak performance and compatibility; and
• a new Windows-native look in Safari for Windows, that uses standard Windows font rendering and native title bar, borders and toolbars so Safari fits the look and feel of other Windows XP and Windows Vista applications

List of Indian Social Bookmarking Sites

Filed under: Bookmarking — admin @ 10:47 pm

Bookmarking sites became a rage with the launch of digg.com. Now there are numerous bookmarking site on the net. In fact now with open source softwares like Pligg, anyone can open a bookmarking site. Today I will list the India specific bookmarking sites.

1. Indiamarks - Submitting process looks very confusing and no direct link to article. Definately not on my favoured list. However, this is a moderated site so you may not see much out out of scope topics.

2. Stamp a Story: This site uses the open source Pligg software. Nothing special about this site. Plain bookmarking site but easy to use.

3. Tagz - This site was developed using new language Django. It is still in its primitive stage and may take time to reach the optimistic level.

4. Surf Urls: This site looks good apart from little graphics defect (SURFURL logo is covering the submit button). Looks like made of Pligg and easy to use. You can even submit unlimited number of blogs. However, at the beginning you are allowed to submit only 1 link within 12 hours. If you have submited any blog then this restriction will be liffted. You can also generate adsense revenue by enterting your Google Adsense publisher ID.

5. Chalo: This site looks promising and lots of traffic. Chances of finding good info and if you submit you info here you may get good coverage.

6. DiggSamachar: A India centric clone of Digg. Do not look like a high traffic site.

7. ApnaStory: Another India centric boomarking site made of Pligg. On this one find info mainly related to bollywood, page 3 and glam world.

8. Ratevin: It looks like a new site, few contents and looks fewer traffic. If you are looking for more coverage, you may give it a miss. Site made of pligg.

9. SlashIndia: Clone of slashdot.com. Site almost dead - no post for than last 1 and 1/2 years.

10. Dolbajao: The layout of this site is a refreshing change from all Pligg used software. Though they have used Pligg, they have used a good template. Looks like it has good traffic and should give good coverage to submitted article.

11. Charchaa: The concept of Charchaa with separate picture, video categories, groups is promising. The site looks new and the promoters will have to market it properly to get wide acceptance.

12. Gyanin: Lots of content and this means traffic too. But very plain and default template of Pligg. Needs some graphical change. Btw, the site has a mobile version.

13. Jhanki: Good content and traffic. Looks like this site is professionally managed. It allows to earn money by showing Google Adsense ad on pages which you submited.

14. Newzly: Previously it was known as HumDigg. Not sure why they changed for a name without any change in quality.

15. NewsCola: Really bad layout and look. This book marking site developed by ibibo can be given a miss.

16. Yeawo: New site - has to do a lot of catching up.

17. Sepiamutiny: Have lots of contents and should have good traffic, given the overall nature of the site featuring blog, separate events section. Should give good coverage.

18. OneIndia Bookmarks: This bookmark section is part of the site oneindia.com. This site is run by the parent company Greynium. Looks like have good traffic due to the main website.

19. Indiha: As of now the site is not working.

20. BharatBoom: The site looks good and has a lot of contents too. Site made of Pligg software. Has substancial amount of foreign content, not completely Bharat.

21. Xoomly: As of now site is not working.

22. SpotOnce: Site looks good. Content mainly from celebrity and glam world. Looks like do not have much traffic. Very likely a pligg based one.

23. Vbharat: As of now site is not working - internal server error.

24. Sursaa: As of now site is not working.

25. Indiantags: Site looks good with a couple of tools like tell a friend, add link to etc. But design of the site is very ordinary. They need a make over. Site looks new but seems to have good content.

26. Indianbytes: Indian Bytes seems to be a popular Indian bookmarking site. Looks like it has good traffic and content. But layout of the site is broken.Offers ad revenue share.

27. BestofIndia: Looks like a high traffic site with lots of content. If you submit your links, it should get good coverage. Site powered by pligg. It offers a toolbar, banner exchange and couple of tools.

28. Oneview: Looks promising. Offers few tools too.

29. IndiaSphere: High traffic bookmarking site. Has different sections like video.

30. Rambhai: Design wise the site is eye catching and also receives one of the highest traffic. Launched by one IIM Ahmedabad guy. Powered by pligg.

31. HotKlix: Hotklix is launched by Indiatimes. These days the Times group is trying to prowl on net and putting their hands on every area. However, given their media reach, Hotklix has not been that successful. Mostly receives traffic from mother sites like timesofindia.com and indiatimes.com.

32. Humsurfer: Site has high traffic and good content. Though layout may not be that good. Offers a lot of tools and features.

33. Indianpad: Probably the best site in terms of traffic, content and ethics. Your link should get high coverage. Indianpad do not allow more than 3 submission at a time, thereby preventing a lot of spam.

Create Banners Free and in a minute

Filed under: Service, Web Design — admin @ 10:20 pm

Well for techies this may not be a problem to create banners but they would also like to do it easily is possible. So what about the no techies who have no idea how to make it? Just pay out or scratch the head! You do not have to do any of them as Bannersnack provides free Banner creating software to create banners quickly.

To create a banner, you will have to create an account with Bannersnack.com and then you will have to add images, some text, preview it, save it and its done. If you would like to make a slideshow banner or a loop showing multiple pictures or text then add multiple pictures with text. However, the free version will have a Bannersnack water mark. If you would like to remove that, you can go for the premium version starting at $9. They also run a referral program through which you can make money by referring people if you have a website or blog.

Below is one of the banner I made for one of my travel site.

Retrieving Lost Website or Blog Database

Filed under: Tips — admin @ 11:00 pm

Successful websites takes a lot of hard work, patience and time to reach that mark. If you lose your database, just think what a catastrophe it will be? Your months or years of work is gone. What a frustration it will be to start from the scratch. So safe keeping of your database is very important. It is important to backup the database and need to have multiple copies at different places. However, if you do not have multiple copies or any backup and you lost your database then what? Will it be possible to retrieve those data? What a million dollar question, is not it!

The answer is yes, to an extent. However, you may not be able to retrieve all of your web pages. I will tell you how. Have you heard of Cache memory in a computer? Cache memory is random access memory (RAM) that a computer microprocessor can access more quickly than it can access regular RAM. As the microprocessor processes data, it looks first in the cache memory and if it finds the data there (from a previous reading of data), it does not have to do the more time-consuming reading of data from larger memory.

The same way search engines like Google also cache the search results like various pages of websites or blogs. So that they can provide faster search result when people are searching. When you search on Google you should see a “Cached and Similar pages” link just besides website link on the right hand side. So if you have lost any webpage, search for that particular page and if you find that link, click on the “Cached” link and it will give that page. Now you can go to source of the page through your browser and copy the source code. Then you can upload the page again on your web server. For blogs you can create the new post with the same details and it will be back dated post. However, Google has time limit of 1 day to 3 months. However, you can try one cache engine called “Gigablast.com” which gives result in terms of your time preference.

I can tell you it works to a large extent, as I have tried it myself. However, you should try this soon after you database is lost.
